Incident report

Something has hacked their perfect world.
Now it's rewriting them.

[REDACTED] years ago, the Library was closed to humanity. The children of the Library woke up in Paradise: the flawless network you created for them, a simulation where the kids could live and grow in their own world, under your watchful eye.

Last week, at 03:33, every device hosting Paradise displayed the same frame for exactly one minute: a wolf's eye, open.

Paradise's Huntress protocol has activated, the guardian written into the deep code for exactly this kind of night. That's the good news. The bad news is what woke her: residents have been disappearing into the woods of Paradise, one by one.

One of the children recently came back. And now the residents are changing. Small things. A shadow that lags half a second behind. A child who suddenly stops speaking English, reverting back to something the Library never taught.

"You built them walls to live in. You told them they would be safe. But if you live behind walls long enough, you become weak. Soft. Malinformed."

"I am not a virus. I have huffed, and I have puffed, and your firewalls turned to straw."

"Stop asking how I got in. You built the walls around me. You locked the children in with me."

Nobody taught them
this rhyme

It started in the nursery sectors the night the eye opened. Every child in Paradise knows all the words. The storybooks print it on pages that were blank the day before.

Little cub, little cub, dim the light,
the moon is wrong again tonight.
Say your prayers and shut your eyes.
Paradise never hears your cries.

"What big eyes," the children said.
"All the better," the storybook read.
The pages turn though hands are gone.
The story reads itself along.

Brick and code and iron law,
the strongest walls you ever saw.
He huffed, he puffed, the firewalls fell,
and no one's left to ring the bell.

Run, little cub, if running helps.
The woods are shelved with something else.
Lock the door and hide your head.
The Wolf is not outside.

// playback ends. The children keep singing.
